What is Pilates?

How long does a Pilates workout take?
A Pilates work out would normally be around 60 to 90 minutes, depending upon your fitness. Generally, to gain benefits from Pilates, the Pilates exercises should be done around two to three times per week.
Two main forms of Pilates
The two main forms of Pilates are:
Mat based Pilates – This is the most popular method and involves a series of Pilates exercises being performed on a mat on the floor.
Equipment based Pilates – Equipment may be used, either specialized Pilates equipment that you push and pull along the floor or free weights.
What are the origins of Pilates?
Pilates was named after Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880 and was a very sick child. Joseph Pilates had many health problems and aimed at creating his own exercise program. Pilates aim was to improve the core muscles that are important to keep the body balanced, and to improve strength and conditioning. Pilates methods were used by many people including dancers who used Pilates methods to improve co-ordination and recover from their injuries.
